Background as Fitness Trainer

 

Born as a hyperactive child into a family of musicians, Jimbo naturally gravitated towards dance, where she could use her body as her instrument.  She was always physically active and experimenting what the human body is capable of, and pushing her range of movement by trying different styles.  She started ballet at a young age, and eventually pursued modern/contemporary dance in High School at NC School of the Arts (Now UNCSA) and continued on to graduating College with her BFA in dance.  She has been dancing professionally and continues to work on her versatility through training and performing  in styles such as hip hop, house, martial arts theater, dance theater, capoeira, wushu, aerial dance, African,etc.

 

As a trainer, Jimbo pulls from her background of dance and martial arts, as well as knowledge of proper alignment and injury prevention.  She became certified NSCA-CPT in 2006, and started her fitness career in personal training at Equinox.  She went on to train private clients, and focuses now on how to keep a healthy body, mind and spirit.  She also teaches group fitness and is starting her own calesthetics cardio dance workout, as well as partner workouts.  She is very passionate about challenging your athleticism, with focus on alignment and efficiency.  Jimbo has also been certified in Pilates, Post-Prenatal program, Kettlebells, and most recently finished her 200hr Yoga certification.

 

Currently, Jimbo is only taking on private clients.  She is no longer part of the Equinox Team.

Group Classes

 

Jimbo has taught all over the world.  As a guest artist, she has taught students of all ages and levels of experience everything from creative movement workshops, Pilobolus Masterclasses, partnering workshops, Modern/contemporary dance technique, hip hop, house, improvisation, and floor workshops.  Feel free to contact her about booking!

MAWU Monday MUD Sessions

 

Jimbo is part of an all female underground house/hip hop crew in NYC.  The crew holds regular practice sessions on Mondays for everyone to join.  Currently they are looking for a new space/home fo the sessions, so please stay tuned for an update!  All ages and levels welcome! Floor workshops

 

It is a class that focuses on how to get in, out, and across the floor smoothly, as well as some elements of inversions.  The movement foundation draws from Jimbo's background in contemporary/modern, house, breaking, and capoeira.  There will be a full body warmup, phrase work, focusing on movement quality and transitions, improvisation, and continuity.  Please inquire about her classes via email.

Contemporary/Modern Dance

 

My current contemporary class fuses modern/contemporary dance with house/hiphop/street styles and martial arts.  We focus on how to move efficiently and safely through the space, in and out of the floor, on the floor, while challenging our athleticism and awareness of our body.  We will start with core exercises then move towards warming up the rest of the body using modern dance technique exercises, as well as martial arts movement concepts.  The second part of class will move towards the dynamic and more explosive phrase work.  The class will be geared towards dancers with more experience to push their technique to the next level, while playing with the quality of their movements.

 

 

Partnering Technique

 

Jimbo's partnering class is heavily influenced by her years of training and performing extensively with Pilobolus Dance Theater, where they consistently partner one another all day, every day.  The clas will start with building awareness of self, to the space, to the others in space, and  go through exercises to warm up the core, the entire body, and your connection to your classmates.  We stress safety and focus on efficiency, and take you through concepts of weight sharing from partial to fully giving/taking weight.  There is an element of improvisation that is explored throughout class, as well as partnering phrase work, and contact improvisation.

Streetstyles Workout

 

This is a high energy dance cardio workout class with movement styles from hip hop, house footwork, lofting floor work, and phrase work.  Starting from the basic two step, the class will take off and accumulate to phrase work, while taking you though some of the basic breaking and house floor work drills to strenghen your core.

Ninja Hiit Workout

 

This class is designed to challenge your personal athleticism and workout until you drop.  It's a calisthenics workout that works the full body and core, mixing martial arts drills of punches, kicks, and jumps with other full body movements.  The 45 min workout with a 15min cool down/stretching is the perfect way to workout, when you only have an hour in your day.
